 The Art of Micropigmentation
in Clinical Practice
by Jeffery Lyle Segal, Make-up artist

In nearly a decade as a micropigmentation technician, I have learned that when you make permanent mark on someone's face or body, you are marking that clients psyche as well. That is why I believe that, first and foremost, the micropigmentation specialist must be both an expert graphic artist and a top-notch cosmetic consultant.

Largely because I have nearly thirty years experience as a conventional makeup artist, I can proudly say my permanent makeup looks just as beautiful and natural as my regular makeup. Unfortunately, I see too many defaced and heartbroken clients who come to me begging for correction of work done by technicians who simply are not artists. The schools which teach students to give their clients an eyebrow pencil to draw their brows, and then instruct those students to tattoo over their client's markings, good or bad, are wrongly leading technicians to believe that they have no responsibility for the designs they put on peoples' faces. Even the term "technician" is misleading, because it implies that successful micropigmentation can be reduced to mechanics without the variables of talent and taste, which simply isn't true. If you can't draw a beautiful brow with an eyebrow pencil, you have absolutely no business doing it with a tattoo machine of any kind.

Inadequate training, poor perception and large egos rolled together are at the root of this problem. So there are dilettantes who only do a few procedures a year and never develop any real application skills, technicians who don't belong to a professional society such as the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals and work in an informational vacuum, and people who have been making the same mistakes for years because they haven't bothered taking continuing education. If you see yourself in this description, here is your opportunity to grow, and change.

The educators, suppliers, professional organizations, and events in this section offer you a wealth of information, which it is your responsibility to mine. It is said that if you're not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. As micropigmentation moves into the new millennium, It is essential that every technician looks critically at his or her work, and commit to being part of the solution.
