M&EA Legislative Reports Keeping abreast of the latest developments in the esthetic field is difficult enough, but when a new technology appears, frequently our state boards must frantically address these new issues in order to maintain standards and safety for the consumers. Unless otherwise noted, individual states have not addressed the microdermabrasion or chemical exfoliant issue, or did not respond to requests for information. Additionally, Utah and Virginia do not regulate aesthetics at this time. Alabama and Ohio require licensees to obtain machine manufacturer or supplier certification of training. Nevada and Tennessee approve machines on a case by case basis after review by the respective State Board, and Nevada specifically prohibits use of salicylic acid and resorcinol. Arizona and California specifically prohibit derma-planning, and allow exfoliation of dead tissue only; Arizona allows 2% Phenol, 37-40% neutralized glycolic acid. Colorado allows use of ....
