 QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q.
I am seeing many clients with hyperpigmentation, I know about Microdermabrasion and Glycolic exfolliants; what else can I do for my esthetic treatments?
S. Douglas, CA
Aesthetician

A.
Hyperpigmentation is a condition estheticians are confronting in increasing numbers. Thus far glycolic and microdermabrasion have been the most common treatments offered to clients, providing varying degrees of success.  In addition to these proven in esthetic treatments, we now have other solutions available.

Esthetic Skin Lightening Facial Treatment

Cleanse and tone skin completely, then saturate a facial gauze with intensive lightening serum serum.
Continue with positive galvanic current over the gauze for approximately 10 minutes and then apply volcanic ash mud, or your preferred clay/algae or mud based mask for 8-15 minutes (or as your manufacturer directs). Your clients should notice a 30% lightening. It should go without saying, sun protection is a must for home care. It is highly recommended to use a lightening serum nightly, or every other night for the more sensitive skinned individuals.
Remember to test for allergies.
Another successful treatment: Apply and remove glycolic/AHA peel from clients face/neck and proceed to apply a lightening serum, then apply a thin layer of volcanic ash mud or white clay over this serum with a fan brush. Let sit for 10-15 minutes, checking for any undue sensitivities. Remove with tepid water and disposables or towels. This treatments has produced very effective results. Of course, this treatment should only be used on clients who have had prior glycolic peels and do not have any known sensitivities. And as professionals, we are all aware that sun protection and lightening serums are essential home care items.
As a precaution, aloe vera, green tea and/or your preferred calming product should always be available, in the event of any irritation or erythema.
